  6. NOTE: Please take a few moments to carefully read this file, it will 
  7. give you an overview of hardware/software requirements to run FasType 
  8. for Windows, including simple installation instructions, and how to 
  9. quickly get started using FasType.

  12. Welcome to FasType
  13. ==================
  14.      FasType for Windows is a typing tutorial program designed for PC's 
  15. running any of the Microsoft Windows Operating Systems.  This includes 
  16. Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows/NT, and Windows 95, 
  17. using high-quality VGA and SVGA displays plus the 101-Key Standard 
  18. Keyboard.  The simple installation instructions that follow will get you 
  19. up and running quickly.

  22. HARDWARE/SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
  23. ==============================
  24.      FasType is distributed many different ways including magnetic 
  25. media, CD's, or electronically on the Internet, various BBS's and on-
  26. line services, and has the following minimum requirements to run 
  27. properly:
  28.  
  29.    o  Any 386, 486, or Pentium computer
  30.    o  Windows-95; Windows 3.1; Windows for Workgroups 3.11; or
  31.       Windows-NT
  32.    o  8MB RAM, (16MB recommended)
  33.    o  A HARD DISK with at least 2MB of available space
  34.    o  VGA or SVGA display capability - (program will NOT work
  35.       on old-style EGA, CGA, or monochrome monitors)
  36.    o  One floppy disk drive or CD-ROM to install diskette or CD-ROM
  37.       distributed versions.
  38.    o  The software program named PKUNZIP if you received a ZIP'd file. 
  39.    o  101-Key Enhanced keyboard or equivalent.

  44.             ****   INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS   ****

  47.      If you downloaded FasType from the Internet, a BBS, or on-line 
  48. service such as CompuServe or America OnLine, then you have to first un-
  49. zip the file into a temporary directory, then run Window's SETUP program 
  50. from the temporary directory.
  51.  
  52.      If you're installing from either a sub-directory, a temporary 
  53. directory, or from a distribution floppy or CD-ROM, simply perform the 
  54. following steps:
  55.  
  56.   o  Bring up Windows
  57.   o  Run the Window's SETUP program by using either the
  58.      Windows File Manager, or the "Run..." menu selection. If 
  59.      you're running from the File Manager, select the PATH 
  60.      where FasType's SETUP.EXE program resides, and click on it
  61.      to start the SETUP process.
  62.   o  From the FILE/RUN menu, type A:SETUP or B:SETUP or whichever
  63.      floppy or CD-ROM address the FasType files reside.
  64.   o  Follow the instructions as you proceed through the install
  65.      process.

  67. At the end of installation, the setup program will create a Program 
  68. Group with several icons. You'll be prompted with a list of selections 
  69. for what to do next.

  71. IMPORTANT NOTE: FasType CANNOT be installed onto and run from floppy 
  72. disks!

  75. TO RUN FASTYPE
  76. ==============
  77.      Before you can run FasType, it must be "installed" under Windows.   
  78. See the INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS above for more information.  From the 
  79. FasType Program Group, double-click on the ICON that says FASTYPE.

  82. WHAT TO DO NEXT
  83. ===============
  84.      The Title Window will appear and stay in view while FasType loads 
  85. its tables and auxiliary files. Next, enter a typist LOGIN name under 
  86. which typing statistics will be kept.  Next, if you've selected the 
  87. Shareware Evaluation installation, then the first Shareware Information 
  88. screen will appear.  Please read it carefully; FasType is distributed on 
  89. a try-before-you-buy basis, and you have 30 days to evaluate the 
  90. program.  Click on OK to get past this screen.  If you've installed the 
  91. Registered Version of FasType, then you'll get the main application 
  92. screen from which you can select typing drills or exercises.

  97. ONCE YOU'VE EXCEEDED THE EVALUATION PERIOD, THE STARTUP 
  98. GRAPHICS SCREEN AND ALL SHAREWARE INFORMATION SCREENS 
  99. WILL STAY ON THE SCREEN FOR A SLIGHTLY LONGER AND LONGER 
  100. TIME DELAY UNTIL YOU CAN PRESS THE OKAY BUTTON.  HOWEVER, 
  101. YOU WILL STILL BE ABLE TO USE FASTYPE AND ALL AVAILABLE 
  102. FEATURES!  WHEN YOU RUN FASTYPE, PLEASE READ THE OPENING 
  103. AND CLOSING SHAREWARE INFORMATION SCREENS FOR MORE 
  104. DETAILS.

  108. SELECTING MENU ITEMS
  109. ====================
  110.      Choose a Typing Drill or Exercise from the "SKILL MENU", then click 
  111. the mouse on "START TYPING", or -- more preferably, type <Alt>+<s> to 
  112. select "START TYPING" from the keyboard.
  113.

  115. WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO AFTER SELECTING A DRILL OR EXERCISE
  116. =======================================================
  117.      For DRILLS:  Place the fingers of each hand on the home keys (ASDF 
  118. JKL;) and type each letter as you are prompted for it.  The program 
  119. selects the letters randomly.  When the drill is finished your "Words 
  120. Per Minute" (WPM) score and other information will be displayed on a 
  121. typing statistics screen.
  122.  
  123.      For EXERCISES:  lines of text will be displayed above the screen 
  124. keyboard; type each character pointed to by the character pointer (there 
  125. are four to choose from) and when you reach the paragraph marker symbol 
  126. or end of the line, press the enter key, or the space bar.  When you 
  127. finish typing the exercise your WPM and other statistics will be 
  128. displayed.

  130.      To STOP TYPING, you can press the ESCAPE key anytime, click the 
  131. mouse on the STOP TYPING menu item, or type <Alt>+<s> again.

  136. EVALUATION PERIOD

  138.      You are licensed to operate FasType on your personal computer for 
  139. evaluation as to its usefulness to you, on a trial basis for 30 days.  
  140. We believe this to be a fair and equitable time period for evaluation 
  141. and we trust your good judgement and sense of fair play in making a 
  142. decision regarding purchase and registration.  See the file SHARWARE.TXT 
  143. or click on the "What is Shareware" icon in the FasType Typing Tutorial 
  144. program group for a detailed explanation of what Shareware is and how 
  145. using Shareware programs can benefit you.

  148. SINGLE-USER LICENSE PURCHASE
  149. ============================
  150.      There are two ways to obtain a single-user license for FasType for 
  151. Windows.   You can get an inexpensive Registration-only license which 
  152. gives you a key to unlock all of the features and remove the shareware 
  153. information screens; or, you can purchase a full package which includes 
  154. a disk with the latest version, a printed user guide, and registration 
  155. key, plus free technical support.

  161. DOCUMENTATION
  162. =============
  163.      The FasType User Guide is located in the DOCS sub-directory and can 
  164. be viewed using the Windows WRITE Applet in the FasType Typing Tutorial 
  165. program group.  While in WRITE, you can format and print the document 
  166. too.  But, if you purchase a Full Package License for FasType, you'll 
  167. receive a handsomely bound and printed User Guide so you don't have to 
  168. waste all that computer paper.

  206.      If today's date (the date you are reading this) is a year or more 
  207. later than the date of the files on this distribution package, than 
  208. please contact Trendtech Corporation for information about the possible 
  209. availability of a more current version of FasType.  Shareware tends to 
  210. "acquire a life of its own" once it's released; not all shareware 
  211. vendors and BBS sysops will bother to update to the latest version from 
  212. the author.  That is why you should only buy or download Shareware from 
  213. vendors or BBS's who are members of "The Association of Shareware

  219.      The "Single-User" registration prices and all Right-To-Copy license 
  220. prices for FasType are guaranteed through December 31, 1999.  If you're

  226. COMPUTER VIRUSES
  227. ================
  228.      You can only be sure of getting a top-quality virus-free version of 
  229. any shareware product by obtaining your copy directly from the author, 
  230. or from a vendor or BBS who is an Associate Member of the Association of 
  231. Shareware Professionals (A.S.P.).  Be suspicious of any program you 
  232. download from a non-member BBS or from a disk obtained from a local disk 
  233. vendor, and whose file dates or copyright notices are more than two 
  234. years old.  If it's a Shareware product, contact the author directly for 
  235. information about more current versions.

  240.      If you're using the Window's Applets "NOTEPAD" or "WRITE" to read 
  241. this file, you can print it to your printer by simply selecting 
  242. File/Print from the menu.  If you're reading this file using your
